What cord would I use to hook up an exterior hard drive (my old one) to my Toshiba Satellite laptop?

Q. I had my hard drive removed but I didn't get them to do a backup from that hardrive to my new one. I figured I could do it myself with coaching. Can you tell me how to do this? What cord i need etc.?
The old hard drive is just the thin rectangular box with pins sticking out . Thanks for helping a dummy.

A. To use an internal hard drive via USB, you need to get a hard drive enclosure. You would need one that works with laptop (2.5") drives, and the correct interface (either IDE or SATA).

Is it possible to dim a Toshiba laptop lower than the default minimum?
Q. I know how to dim my laptop using the lower brightness option. However the lowest it goes is still brighter than I would like it to be. Is there any other way to get the screen brightness lower than this? My old laptop (5ish years old) had a much lower brightness range which I am trying to emulate.

A. Yes it is, but a tech would have to go inside and change some parts, and the cost would be high...

How can i access the internet from a toshiba satellite pro?
Q. i cant use a regular cord becasue theres no spot to put it. do i have to use wireless?
model is 460cdx

A. These are relatively OLD laptops P133 if I remember correctly, and they were not made with either ethernet or wifi. To use the inter net you will need either an ethernet card or a wifi card. If you have a wireless router you can just add a wireless pcmcia card. If you only have an ethernet router you can add an ethernet pcmcia card.

You will have to add one or the other to connect to the internet.

What is the average lifespan of a Toshiba laptop?

Q. I've had mine for a year and a half so far... I'd like to know how long it should last!

A. Most people will tell you that on average 5 years. But my son also has a Toshiba and it's still running on 8 years and shows no sign of stopping. If you take care of it, it will last a long time.

What is the most advanced operating software that I can run on my Toshiba Satellite R10 laptop?
Q. I currently have windows version crappy 0.01, and want to upgrade. I want the best OS for my computer, though I am not entirely certain that my toshiba will run some more of the more advanced OSes because they would run slowly.

A. The R10 doesn't meet the requirements for running Windows 7. It has only 512 MB of RAM, according to a 2005 review I read on CNET, and Windows 7 requires 1 GB of RAM.

My Sony vaio turns on but comes up a black screen. How do I wipe it without using a wipeout disc?

Q. I own a Sony Vaio I don't exactly know what year but I think it has a virus due to alot of downloading. All I know is that when I turn it on, it comes up a black screen without displaying the vaio or any screens. My question is what are my options? And if my only option is to wipe it, how do I do that without using back-up discs or a wipe-out discs?

A. Hello,
If you are getting nothing at all, no screen, nothing, I would not immediately assume it was the operating system. It almost sounds like it could be a display problem. Was it dropped recently? Might try taking the easy accessible items out of the laptop (ram, hard drive if possible) and try to re-set them prior to this. I guess one way would be to try to boot it with a bootable disk, ie: xp. Can you get to your bios?

How much does a Sony Ericsson W580i cost with Rogers without a plan?
Q. It says it costs $149.99 on a 3 year term plan, but when we click to read more on the page I get a HTTP 500 error.

Does anyone know the price of this beautiful piece of technology without a plan?

My samsung e316 needs a bluetooth dongle to transfer pics to my pc. How does this work?

Q. I have Windows Vista and have located the right program to download but I am confused as to how my cell figures into this connection wise...

A. First you will need to turn on Samsung Bluetooth. If you go to your My Files on Samsung, you can select the picture and click on options to send picture via Bluetooth.
It will prompt you for setup for the first time connecting to your PC. Key in the same passcode on both the Samsung and the PC. After that, you will see the pictures in your Bluetooth Exchange Folder or depending on the settings u have made on wher bluetooth pics are stored.

What happens if you loose your Sony digital camera uploader cord?

Q. I have a sony digital camera. I lost the cord that uploads all of your pictures onto your computer. Would they sell them separately at the store? Is there another way to upload them using a different cord?

A. You can find one on e-bay. A friend at work paid $1 for a camera usb cable.

You can also get a usb card reader for very cheap at any electronics store.

Q. My sony tv remote (RM-YDO24) has problems with the volume and jump button so I thought I might need to take it apart and clean. Anyways, I would like to know, in detail, how to disassemble my remote. Do i need to take off the strips on the sides of the remote? Any suggestions would be a great help. Thanks.

A. Check the inside of the battery compartment just in case but my Sony RM-X800 doesn't have any screws holding it together, it's all plastic clips. Gentle persuasion with a couple of flat bladed screwdrivers (one quarter inch and one small electrical one) was required to prize the two halves apart. There weren't any strips on the side of mine but if yours has strips and no visible slots along the side then removing the strips may be necessary. Go easy, you have to be firm but not so firm as to break the plastic. Cleaning up the black spots and the corresponding bits on the overlay with switch cleaner (ether) worked for mine to get it going. Replace the batteries when you've got it back together.

Why does the webcam on my Toshiba Satellite stop and start when I record with it?

Q. The video freezes in the middle of something then starts again and then the sound and the picture are also out of synch. What's with that? Thanks.

A. Sounds like the laptop does not have enough RAM and/or hard disk speed to keep up with the webcam's demands.

A. Yup micro usb its the basic phone charger everyone has it and google images of it to see :D

A. That phone supports microSD cards. This means you can insert a card, then transfer the pictures from internal memory to the card. You do that in memory settings. You can then either plug the card into a card reader, or connect the phone as a USB mass storage device - either way, the card will show up on your computer as a removable drive you can copy stuff from.

Toshiba laptop will not start windows vista?
Q. Out of no where my laptop stopped working. It will not load windows vista at all. It gives me the option of choosing "starup repair" which doesn't work without a disk apparently, or start windows normally.
When I try to start it normally, it looks like it will, the little green bar comes up at the bottom and says microsoft corperation and it seems like it is loading, but it goes on like that all day without doing anything else.
Is there anyway to fix this with out a disc for the start up repair?

A. Shut down then restart and hit F8 repeatedly to enter the restore modes
restore to a time before the error
Restore to a time you know to be good
restore to factory
repair windows (this is normally the same as the window which is automatically shown )
Run in safe mode this can be used to repair a bad boot by seeing what was /is the error and correcting it (possible an update with corrupt or incompatible data) disable the last updates and reboot

How much should i sell my Toshiba Satellite laptop for?
Q. it functions great, but its about two years old so it has some exterior flaws like scratches and worn out paint. It has an inbuilt webcam though and runs really fast. any suggestions?

A. You didn't say how much RAM it has, what kind of CPU it has, whether it has a CD/DVD drive, etc. The best way to see realistic pricing for used computers is to go to eBay and search *completed* listings for your model.

(Completed listings show what an item actually sold for).

How do I get sound on my netbook from samsung external disk drive?

Q. Just bought it and even installed Nero startsmart which came with it and also tried windows media player. Both produce good video but neither produce audio!

What should I do?

A. You need to install the proper a/v codecs. Videos are encoded with a/v codecs. Download the k-lite pack from free-codecs.com and try again...and switch to a different player than WMP like Winamp or VLC or something.

Q. Out of no where my laptop stopped working. It will not load windows vista at all. It gives me the option of choosing "starup repair" which doesn't work without a disk apparently, or start windows normally.
When I try to start it normally, it looks like it will, the little green bar comes up at the bottom and says microsoft corperation and it seems like it is loading, but it goes on like that all day without doing anything else.
Is there anyway to fix this with out a disc for the start up repair?

A. Shut down then restart and hit F8 repeatedly to enter the restore modes
restore to a time before the error
Restore to a time you know to be good
restore to factory
repair windows (this is normally the same as the window which is automatically shown )
Run in safe mode this can be used to repair a bad boot by seeing what was /is the error and correcting it (possible an update with corrupt or incompatible data) disable the last updates and reboot

Q. it functions great, but its about two years old so it has some exterior flaws like scratches and worn out paint. It has an inbuilt webcam though and runs really fast. any suggestions?

A. You didn't say how much RAM it has, what kind of CPU it has, whether it has a CD/DVD drive, etc. The best way to see realistic pricing for used computers is to go to eBay and search *completed* listings for your model.

How do I get sound on my netbook from samsung external disk drive?

Q. Just bought it and even installed Nero startsmart which came with it and also tried windows media player. Both produce good video but neither produce audio!

What should I do?

A. You need to install the proper a/v codecs. Videos are encoded with a/v codecs. Download the k-lite pack from free-codecs.com and try again...and switch to a different player than WMP like Winamp or VLC or something.

How to use the front camera on a samsung galaxy ace?
Q. Apparently there is a front camera on the ace phone but I don't know how to acces it. ?

A. sorry there is no secondary cam in the galaxy ace. the spots you see on the phone is the proximity sense . from those only you experience the light off when you are in a call.

My samsung e316 needs a bluetooth dongle to transfer pics to my pc. How does this work?
Q. I have Windows Vista and have located the right program to download but I am confused as to how my cell figures into this connection wise...

A. First you will need to turn on Samsung Bluetooth. If you go to your My Files on Samsung, you can select the picture and click on options to send picture via Bluetooth.
It will prompt you for setup for the first time connecting to your PC. Key in the same passcode on both the Samsung and the PC. After that, you will see the pictures in your Bluetooth Exchange Folder or depending on the settings u have made on wher bluetooth pics are stored.

What happens if you loose your Sony digital camera uploader cord?
Q. I have a sony digital camera. I lost the cord that uploads all of your pictures onto your computer. Would they sell them separately at the store? Is there another way to upload them using a different cord?

A. You can find one on e-bay. A friend at work paid $1 for a camera usb cable.

You can also get a usb card reader for very cheap at any electronics store.

A. 1) Press OK to access your menu
2) Navigate to "Settings", or just press "#"
3) Press "8" to select "More..."
4) Press "8" to select "Restrict and Lock"
5) Press "0" to select "Security"
6) Enter your current lock code
7) Press "1" to select "Change Lock Code"
